Beckenham Business Day a success all round!

Last month’s Beckenham Business Day (on 27 September), was a resounding success with over 100 businesses attending the day of networking, advice sessions and practical talks on business topics.

The third Beckenham Business Day, organised by Beckenham Business Association (BBA) and supported by Beckenham Together BID, was held at the Odeon Cinema on Beckenham High Street.

It was opened by the Mayor of Bromley Cllr Kim Botting and her consort Cllr Mike Botting.

BBA Chair Jackie Groundsell ran her ever popular speed networking sessions, and lifestyle motivator, speaker and author Mathy Lisika-Misende, was MC for the day.

Speaker topics included Sources of Alternative Funding; The Beginners’ Guide to Local SEO; BE Irresistible: The Three Keys to achieving success in today’s competitive marketplace; Your Digital World and Sales for Millennials and Beyond.

A raffle on the day, with prizes donated by local businesses, raised £180.75 for MINDCare Dementia Support, Beckenham, part of Bromley & Lewisham Mind, a charity that provides support to help adults with dementia stay in their homes and local communities.

The event was sponsored by Beckenham Odeon Cinema, News Shopper, Beckenham Business Association, AAA Minicabs, Waitrose, Tangent Office Supplies, Burger & Bubbles, MasterLight Photography, Peter Schneiter Photography and was supported by BBA member businesses 1230 The Women’s Company, Bailey Ahmad, Gradfinale Yearbooks, Jane Rogers PR and Carol Ann Walters PR.

Jackie said she was overwhelmed with the positive feedback the BBA received from the businesses that attended, saying: “Not only was the atmosphere electric from the moment the doors opened but the day was filled with compliments from people wanting to know when the next event was going to be held.

“We’re proud to know that we’re meeting the needs of Beckenham businesses as the success of the day shows.”

Plans are already underway for next year’s Beckenham Business Day, scheduled for the last Thursday of September, with further details to be released soon.

A BBA Christmas event for members and guests will be held on Thursday 6 December.

A collaboration between a number of local businesses and organisations, including Three Hounds Beer, Beckenham Together BID, the Purple Flag and Link Asset Services, the event was organised to celebrate Beckenham’s prestigious Purple Flag award for its night time economy.

A number of local traders were located between the Library, the Spa and Venue 28, along with live music and a children’s book reading session. There were lots of food and drink stalls, plus several local traders selling great gifts and items and the atmosphere was buzzing!

Purple Flag Update

Purple Flag is spreading the Beckenham Love throughout February. Banners are flying high, and beer mats and window stickers have been distributed.

Monthly Purple Flag meetings draw together ideas and concerns from evening and night-time traders with the aim of maintaining the town’s safe, vibrant variety of evening and night-time entertainment.

We’ve been taking action on controlling taxi queues, checking on door marshals, street-cleaning litter from clubs and takeaways, and liaising between local residents and club and pub operators.

The focus for Spring will be on increasing the 5.00 pm – 7.00 pm early evening economy. Anyone who trades after 5.00 pm – no matter how occasionally – is welcome to come to the Purple Flag meetings. The next one is set for 5.45 pm Monday 26 February.

Drop us an email, CLICK HERE, and we’ll send you an invitation.

Beckenham businesses celebrate launch of BID Campaign

Beckenham businesses have welcomed the launch of a campaign to set up a Business Improvement District (BID) in the town.

The ‘Beckenham – Together’ BID would pool together money from a levy on local businesses to provide services designed to bring more customers and spending into the area.

Businesses with a rateable value of £5,000 will be receiving a copy of the business plan and a voting slip, and can vote up until 1 March 2018.

Beckenham is looking to join Bromley and Orpington, who both have successful BIDs in their town centre, while neighbouring Penge is also looking to launch their own campaign for a BID.

The Steering Group behind the campaign for the ‘Beckenham – Together’ BID include representatives from a range of local independent businesses, including The Beckenham Bookshop, Burger and Bubbles, AAA-MiniCabs, Creases and Gallery 17, and large businesses such as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, The Spa, and Link Asset Services.

‘Beckenham – Together’ are looking to deliver services such as a local loyalty scheme, a comprehensive place marketing offer for Beckenham, an expanded programme of events and assistance with a parking review in the town centre.

Jackie Groundsell, Chair of Beckenham Business Association and interim chair of the BID Steering Group, said, “Our town centre has faced its fair share of challenges in recent years and it’s time for local businesses to take control of its future.

“We have spent over a year speaking to local companies and traders to come up with a business plan to provide services that are designed to ensure our town centre remains the thriving social and economic heart of our community.

“It’s important that as many businesses as possible get out and vote in support of the BID and we don’t lose this opportunity.”

Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal and Recreation said, “This proposal will bring additional investment into Beckenham and will empower businesses to help bring about improvements with benefits to the wider local economy and residents as well as businesses themselves.

“We will keep working to improve Beckenham in partnership with businesses to help Beckenham reach its potential.”

‘Get ready for tax changes’ urges Beckenham businessman

Local tax and accountancy expert and Beckenham Business Association (BBA) member, Zeeshan Zaidi, is urging other small business owners to start preparing for the biggest shake up of the tax system, Making Tax Digital.

Making Tax Digital Beckenham Business Association

Zeeshan (centre) with his employee Hannah (left) and Beckenham Business Association Chair, Jackie Groundsell (right).

Speaking at the recent Beckenham Business Association event, which was held at his TaxAssist Accountants‘ office on Beckenham High Street, Zeeshan told the crowd of gathered local businesses and councillors how Making Tax Digital will affect them.

Zeeshan said: “It’s great to be part of such a vibrant business community in Beckenham. Having been part of the BBA since setting up my own business in 2016, it’s been wonderful to meet like-minded business owners over the past year.”

The event, which took place on 23 May, was Zeeshan’s first hosting experience since opening TaxAssist Accountants in Beckenham last year.

“With many local businesses facing a raft of changes and new responsibilities, my top business tip focused on Making Tax Digital, something which small business owners need to start acting on now.

“The BBA networking meetings are a great way to showcase my business and how I can support and offer jargon-free advice to other small businesses in and around Beckenham.”

WORDfest

Event attendees also heard from the organisers of this year’s WORDfest, Harris Academy, and received an update from FM Conway on the High Street improvement works.

If you would like to get involved in WORDfest as a writer or illustrator, or take part in the Edible Book competition, please visit their website.
