Beckenham businesses celebrate launch of BID Campaign

Beckenham businesses have welcomed the launch of a campaign to set up a Business Improvement District (BID) in the town.

The ‘Beckenham – Together’ BID would pool together money from a levy on local businesses to provide services designed to bring more customers and spending into the area.

Businesses with a rateable value of £5,000 will be receiving a copy of the business plan and a voting slip, and can vote up until 1 March 2018.

Beckenham is looking to join Bromley and Orpington, who both have successful BIDs in their town centre, while neighbouring Penge is also looking to launch their own campaign for a BID.

The Steering Group behind the campaign for the ‘Beckenham – Together’ BID include representatives from a range of local independent businesses, including The Beckenham Bookshop, Burger and Bubbles, AAA-MiniCabs, Creases and Gallery 17, and large businesses such as Waitrose, Sainsbury’s, The Spa, and Link Asset Services.

‘Beckenham – Together’ are looking to deliver services such as a local loyalty scheme, a comprehensive place marketing offer for Beckenham, an expanded programme of events and assistance with a parking review in the town centre.

Jackie Groundsell, Chair of Beckenham Business Association and interim chair of the BID Steering Group, said, “Our town centre has faced its fair share of challenges in recent years and it’s time for local businesses to take control of its future.

“We have spent over a year speaking to local companies and traders to come up with a business plan to provide services that are designed to ensure our town centre remains the thriving social and economic heart of our community.

“It’s important that as many businesses as possible get out and vote in support of the BID and we don’t lose this opportunity.”

Councillor Peter Morgan, Executive Councillor for Renewal and Recreation said, “This proposal will bring additional investment into Beckenham and will empower businesses to help bring about improvements with benefits to the wider local economy and residents as well as businesses themselves.

“We will keep working to improve Beckenham in partnership with businesses to help Beckenham reach its potential.”

Help shape the future of Beckenham Town Centre

Over 200 town centres across the UK are now using the Business Improvement District (BID) model to manage their town centres.

Locally, Orpington became a BID in 2013 and Bromley became a BID in 2015.

A BID is where an independent company is set up by the businesses in the town centre to fund and manage the projects carried out in their town.

Bromley Council have commissioned The Mosaic Partnership to ascertain whether a BID management model would be feasible for Beckenham Town Centre.

Two workshops will be held on Monday 9 May at 4.30pm and 6pm at Dizzy’s Diner 256-258 High St, Beckenham.

This is a great opportunity to share your views on the town and the potential improvements.

All Beckenham Town Centre businesses are invited to attend and complete the surveys.

For more information, email towncentres@bromley.gov.uk.

What is a BID?

A Business Improvement District is a way for businesses in a defined area to decide what they need to deliver to help their business to thrive.

If accepted by the business community, a BID business plan is written that will include these suggestions and local businesses will have a chance to vote for the plan. There has to be a majority in favour for the plan to go ahead.
